What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX is an injectable product that is popularly known as an option for smoothing wrinkles. However, the active ingredient in BOTOX—an ingredient called botulinum toxin type A—makes it notably versatile. BOTOX is a neuromodulator, which means it intercepts the nerve signals that your brain sends to certain muscles. BOTOX works only where it’s administered, so undergoing BOTOX to treat wrinkles will not affect your body’s other functions.

Throughout the years, BOTOX has been found to be so much more than a cosmetic product. Its predictable, effective mechanism of action makes it a good choice for treating a multitude of conditions that are caused by overactive muscles. At Preventative Medical Clinic, our trained injectors use BOTOX to treat an array of conditions.

What Can BOTOX Do?

BOTOX has been shown to be an effective option for treating or reducing the appearance of the following:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Vertical lines between the brows
  • Lip lines, also known as “smoker’s lines”
  • Drooping brows
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • A “gummy” smile
  • Crinkles on either side of the nose
  • Chin dimples
  • Vertical neck bands
  • Migraine headaches
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ
  • Excessive sweating

Regardless of the indication, BOTOX is always administered in a series of injections, making it a very popular option for people who are pressed for time or simply don’t want to undergo more complex or invasive therapies.

Your BOTOX Appointment

We offer BOTOX in both our Millard and Omaha locations. During your appointment, a qualified member of our medical team discusses your goals with you. After a brief discussion, he or she makes injections where it’s necessary in order to treat the specific concerns that bother you. For example, excessive sweating can be treated with injections to the underarms. TMJ symptoms can be treated with injections to the jaw, and wrinkles are corrected with careful injections to the face.

What To Avoid Before and After BOTOX Injections

Whether you’re getting BOTOX for the first time or want to maintain the results of previous treatments, you can set the stage for successful outcomes by refraining from certain activities before and after your injections.

Preparing for Treatment

Before your BOTOX treatment, avoid:

  • Taking anti-inflammatory medications for 72 hours before treatment
  • Consuming alcohol or taking blood thinners for 48 hours before treatment
  • Exercising strenuously or exposing yourself to excessive heat 24 hours before treatment

After the Treatment

Following a BOTOX treatment, avoid:

  • Lying down for at least 6 hours
  • Exercising strenuously or exposing yourself to excessive heat for at least 12 hours
  • Rubbing or massaging the treatment area or applying makeup for at least 12 hours
  • Consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours

If you have any questions either before or after your appointment, we encourage you to contact our clinic.

Can BOTOX Injections Be Combined With Other Treatments?

In some cases, your BOTOX treatment may be augmented by the use of fillers or even KYBELLA®, an injectable treatment that can reduce the appearance of a double chin.

What’s the Difference Between BOTOX & Dermal Fillers?

Fillers address different types of wrinkles than BOTOX, which works by limiting the movement of muscles that create “expression lines.” Fillers such as the JUVÉDERM® family of products, on the other hand, minimize wrinkles caused by age-related volume loss. We use fillers for:

  • Correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds
  • Cheek volume restoration
  • Improving cheek skin smoothness and hydration
  • Lip augmentation
  • Marionette line correction
  • Nasolabial fold correction
  • Depressed scar treatment

In addition, younger patients can get fillers to create more attractive facial contouring.

Long-Term Results

BOTOX does not deliver immediate results. Instead, it can take several days to weeks to completely see or feel a difference. The longevity of your BOTOX results is highly dependent on where in your body the injections were made. Areas that move a lot, such as the mouth, typically have shorter-lived results than areas that don’t, such as the underarms. You can expect your results to last for about 4 months or so.

BOTOX FAQ

What’s the right age to start getting BOTOX?

There is no hard and fast rule about what age is best to start getting BOTOX, other than that the FDA has approved it for patients 18 and older. Most people notice early signs of aging in their early 30s, but some patients may see worry lines or crow’s feet develop years earlier.

Can BOTOX prevent wrinkles?

Because BOTOX limits the movement of muscles that cause wrinkles to form, the treatment can actually postpone, if not prevent, those wrinkles from developing. Patients in their late 20s and early 30s come to our clinic for preventative BOTOX injections.

Can BOTOX make wrinkles worse?

Some people notice wrinkles more as the effects of BOTOX injections wear off, and they assume the treatment made their wrinkles worse. That’s not the case. BOTOX creates smoother skin, but patients need periodic injections to maintain those results.

Will I still look natural after getting BOTOX injections?

Women and men getting BOTOX injections for the first time are often worried about having their faces appear “frozen” after the treatment. We’ve all seen photos of celebrities with that look. The key to getting results that look natural is to choose a highly trained and experienced injector who takes a conservative approach to treatments, especially for first-time BOTOX patients.

Are BOTOX or fillers better?

BOTOX and fillers target different types of wrinkles, so one isn’t better than the other. In fact, we often recommend combining BOTOX and filler injections during a single appointment to create comprehensive results.

We can’t wait to help you discover the possibilities of BOTOX. Please request your visit online or call our office at (402) 408-0017 to make your appointment.
